Omišalj, a town and port in the north-western part of the
island of Krk. Situated on a knoll (82 m) above the sea, the large
Omisalj Bay, which is well protected from all winds except from
north-westerlies. Chief occupations arefarming, fishing, chemicals
and tourism. A tanker terminal is located in the Omisalj Bay. Lies
on the local road which is connected with the regional road running
from the Bridge of Krk to Baska. - Airport "Rijeka" is
situated near Omisalj.
Although Omišalj is mentioned in the XII. century as "Castri
musculi" (from the Latin "Ad musculi" the
place of shells), it has prehistoric foundations.
Its evolution can be followed from the Liburnian and Roman times
over the Krk princes Frankopans to the present times. Since the
eleventh century, Omialj has been an important centre of literacy
and Glagoliticism. The first written monuments have their origins
in the twelfth century.
